How To Stay Sassy And Warm This Winter | Part Two

How to stay sassy and warm this winter
FAUX FUR COAT - VINTAGE | JEANS - GAP | DRESS - VINTAGE | BERET - ASOS | BOOTS - OLD ASOS
Location: Avenue Fairmount, Montreal.

Hello and welcome to part two of this mini series about my eternal quest to stay sassy and warm this winter. If you are not up to date, I am currently living through the coldest winter of my life in Montreal and as I do like experimenting with what I wear, I am refusing to succumb to the jeans/jumpers/big boots/big coat look everyday of winter (even if I do enjoy this comfy ensemble on occasion) and am constantly thinking up new ways to keep my outfits interesting. Make sure you check part one, which is all about the details, but today we are talking about layering.

Layering is a big trend for AW16 so that boded well for practicality and styling during a snowy and subzero Canadian winter. It recently struck me how when it is bitterly cold, a coat will often hide everything I am wearing underneath but what I put on the bottom half of my body will always be on show. So when I stumbled across this gorgeous midi dress at work I thought I would give it a shot.

There are so many things that I love about this dress and that make it the perfect winter layering piece. I have worn it over my trusty Gap jeans and a black turtleneck - my usual go-to outfit on those cba days - giving the overall look a bit more shape with a silver waist belt. The slightly transparent fabric means that you can still see the jeans underneath, which is one of the joys of layering, and even when my understated black faux fur coat is fastened there is still lots going on in this look.

As a stand alone piece, the dress is really on trend. Maximalism, granny chic and ruffles are all trends that I love and this handmade vintage baby ticks all those boxes. Also, purple is big this season and adds a great pop colour to my winter wardrobe. I am already seeing tulle and mesh dresses all over the high street for spring/summer so this is my winter version for now. Admittedly, it was a bit of a wild purchase but I am dead keen on the result - what do you think?

How To Stay Sassy And Warm This Winter | Part 1

COAT - VINTAGE | JUMPER - &OTHERSTORIES | JEANS - ASOS (SIMILAR) | TURTLENECK - SECONDHAND | BOOTS - DR MARTENS | HAT - JOHN LEWIS (OLD) | SCARF - TOPSHOP | LIPSTICK - MAC 'DIVA'

As a fashion blogger living through my coldest winter yet, I am still stubbornly refusing to let the subzero temperatures affect my sartorial choices...well, not too much anyway. I have not invested in a unflattering puffer jacket nor will I be donning my feet with ugly snow boots any time soon and guess what? I am surviving. So with this thought constantly on my mind, I thought I would create a little series with tips on how I am staying warm in style this winter in Montreal.

There is no doubt about it that dresses and skirts are out of the question for the next few months - even I am not committed enough to having dangerously numb legs and a draft wooshing up between my thighs - so jeans and wool tailored trousers are my winter uniform, with tights or leggings underneath, of course. These jeans have a rather large knee rip, which, if left unattended, would allow for more wooshing so I added some fishnets tights for a little warmth and an extra detail.

See, today's outfit - even though it is quite simply a jeans and jumper combo - is all about the details. These days I am living in turtlenecks and layering this stripy one underneath my new beloved &Other Stories jumper adds that bit of interest while keeping my neck warm.

Accessories are a great way to spice up any look and during colder months we have even more options, with all the scarves, gloves and hats that are unavoidable in a Canadian winter. I have had this incredible leopard print faux fur bucket-style hat for a few years now and it is the softest and cosiest hat ever. Plus I am hitting two keys winter trends and feeling super sassy while doing so - win win. Finally, if all else fails, a statement lip can bring any winter outfit from boring to striking and it's pretty effortless too. Luckily MAC's Diva shade perfectly matches my cherry red Dr Martens boots, which are currently the only suitable thing I own for foot-deep snow.

Daytime Metallica

Dress - vintage (SIMILAR & SIMILAR), Jumper - handmade (SIMILAR), Coat - vintage (SIMILAR), Tights - H&M (in store), Boots - old CLARKS (SIMILAR), Beret - TOPSHOP
Location: Square Saint-Louis, Montréal

December starts in just a few days, which means festive season is officially upon us - hooray! I absolutely love this time of year, from the great food (how am I going to get hold of mince pies in Canada?!), beautiful light displays and the smell of Christmas trees to snuggly nights in and, of course, festive fashion. Although I wear metallics all year round, I especially love the excuse to get my sparkle on at this time of year so I thought it was about time to share a silvery outfit, which I am absolutely loving.

I hope that this outfit shows those of you that are a little wary about wearing metallics outside an actual party, that it is totally possible to make glittery pieces work in your daytime wardrobe. I love the slouchy look of this outfit, which is exactly how to nail sparkly dressing during the day - no figure-hugging pieces, please, and my favourite knit helps to really dress down this incredible blue toned silver pleated dress that I bought a few years ago. How satisfying is it when you find something in your wardrobe that is so on trend?

I finished off the look with my snuggly, chunky black boots and some totally not weather appropriate fishnet tights - my legs were completely numb after this little outing on Saturday but I am just not into the "look" of proper tights right now. Oh and let's not forget everyone's favourite hat - the beret, which completes the outfit just perfectly.

How are you wearing metallics this season?

The Perfect Match

Jumper - ZARA, Shirt - old H&M, Jeans - GAP, Coat - vintage (SIMILAR), Boots - OFFICE
Location: Mile End, Montreal

Fashion is a funny thing. Sometimes I can struggle to create interesting combinations and other times an outfit can come together as if by fate. Well that is exactly what happened with this one and there is nothing more satisfying than finding some pieces that work so perfectly together. After weeks of being surrounded by vintage clothes at work I had a sudden craving to hit the high street to buy something new, something easy to find and something more expensive. As much as I love vintage and thrift shopping (as discussed in last Monday's BARGAIN POST), it is certainly important to get out of that vintage bubble from time to time and see what the high street has to offer. Gap, which is not somewhere that I normally shop, and Zara, which I am obsessed with, came up absolute trumps and I am so excited to share this outfit.

I have been wanting some of Gap's light blue straight leg jeans for ages and often when I obsess over something in particular for so long, it ends up being a disappointment, but not these jeans. They are so comfortable, the length is perfect and the wash goes beautifully with this silver or "metallic grey" knit. I have been looking for a soft, velvet nineties style jumper like this and after seeing a few misshapen ones in vintage shops, Zara answered my prayers by offering not one but three versions of this knit (and yes I totally bought the rich gold version too!).

I thought that if I was going to buy a super trend-based piece, it might as well be jumper that will keep me warm and on trend during the harsh and imminent Canadian winter. I love the knit's cropped length and it looks great layered over a crisp white shirt for the perfect clash of textures and styles. The velvet fabric means there are different tones of grey and silver running through the jumper which allows you to dress it up or down depending on your mood! Today I am embracing the silver with the addition of my favourite silver boots, which also look so good with the light wash of these jeans, and tying everything together with that blue faux fur coat whose teddy bear material adds another welcome element to this total mishmash of textures. I am absolutely loving this outfit, especially how it came together so naturally, and I cannot wait to wear this knit through party season too!

I hope you have a great day and let me know what you're loving on the high street right now!

I'm Wearing Brown - What?

Shearling coat - vintage, (SIMILAR), Shirt - vintage (SIMILAR), Trousers - vintage (SIMILAR), Boots - DR MARTENS
Location: Mile End, Montreal

Today I'm wearing brown (twice) - can you believe it?! Ok to understand this little shocker, it is crucial to know that as a child, my sister and I would tease our grandma about her favourite colour being brown - "it's so boring" we would say - well just look at me now.

I think there are two reasons why I am starting to get on board with the colour brown and this outfit showcases these perfectly. Firstly, I have long been obsessed with this gorgeous tan brown shearling coat that I picked up a few years ago. I am so chuffed that I get to wear it again after its little hiatus during the mild winter I spent last year in Barcelona and it is keeping me super warm now the temperatures have plunged in Montreal. Secondly, I have discovered that blue is the perfect colour to wear with rich, autumnal brown and golden shades and and I have a lot of time for the colour blue. I am absolutely loving the way this blue and white striped shirt - borrowed from Lewis' recent thrift store shirt haul - looks with these deep brown cigarette trousers. Oh and finally - yep, that's a third reason, my bad - brown is "in" don't you know? My grandma will be pleased to know that she is so bang on trend this season.

What do you think of the colour brown? Have you been trying any new colour palettes or pushing your fashion boundaries recently?

VELVET TROUSERS - VINTAGE (SIMILAR), T-SHIRT - OLD, BOOTS - OFFICE, LEATHER JACKET - OLD ASOS (SIMILAR), SUNGLASSES - RAY BAN, CHOKER - ASOS
LOCATION: VIEUX-PORT, MONTREAL

Oh what a difference a couple of weeks can make. I shot this look on a pretty hot autumnal day just at the beginning of October and since then, the temperature has seriously dropped here in Montreal. I am currently sitting in my cold apartment wearing a thermal jumper and leggings under my jeans - glamourous, I know - pining for the sun after three days of non-stop rain. Although I do absolutely love winter and the layers, coats and faux fur that come with it, this outfit is certainly now only a reminder of warmer days but I thought I would share it anyway for those of you still experiencing the last of the Indian summer.

I love this outfit - it is such a cool and comfy look that gives a few nods to the AW16 trends. I don't know what it is about velvet but as soon as October hits, I am all over that shizz, searching high and low for the perfect soft but sassy pieces. These amazing velvet trousers just fell into my hands at the vintage shop where I am working and it was love at first sight. They are perfect autumn/winter update from the ever-so-popular plissée wide leg versions from the summer while being that bit warmer and party season appropriate. I am so excited to style these up for some more wintery looks but today I have gone for a simple old band slogan tee, my trusty leather jacket and those silver boots that will continue to look even more perfectly festive next to these crushed velvet trousers as we get deeper into winter.

What pieces are you searching for this season? Are you digging velvet for autumn/winter?
