Fashion On 35mm Film

Fashion on film - experimenting with film photography for outfit posts
My love for photography truly began when I studied analog photography for A-level but because of the ease and cheapness of digital, I have only been sporadically taking film photos...until now. I had been toying with the idea of trying film photography for an outfit post for a while and finally took the plunge this summer. We did not even take any digital back-ups because I wanted to be fully committed to this experiment and I was confident enough in the art and in my photographer that I thought they were not needed - and I was right. These days we are too spoilt by being able to shoot hundreds of photos, pick our favourites and edit them to perfection and although this is extremely convenient, sometimes I wonder - where is the beauty in that? Even - what is the art of that? So I thought I would strip things back, take just eight outfit photos - all of which you see here and have not been edited - and try fashion blogging the way our mothers would have done it, if such a thing had existed back in the 80s.

I am absolutely chuffed with these photos. With just eight photos to play with, I had to really pose and there was the danger that these photos wouldn't look natural but I don't think that is the case at all! In fact, I almost like that in the third photo down I am mid-blink as this makes things more real.

I love the aesthetic of film - its vintage grain, different colours and perfectly imperfect out of focus blur - and it is certainly something that I want to incorporate more frequently onto this blog. I have another mini film outfit post coming later in the week that we shot one beautiful morning in Barcelona and after that I have to get shooting in Montreal!

Let's talk fashion now because this is an outfit post after all! I have already posted a summery outfit featuring this WHITE BLOUSE but this is a much more transitional look that I have been craving oh so much recently. I always think that white blouses look so great just tucked into a pair of jeans and today I have finished the outfit with my favourite silver boots to make this look a little more special for the film!

What do you think of film photography? Would you like to see outfits shot on film become a regular feature on Fashion Et Moi?

Jacket - vintage (SIMILAR), Top - secondhand, Jeans - old ASOS (SIMILAR), Boots - OFFICE, Choker - ASOS
Location: Redland, Bristol

Today's outfit is very much an everyday look, made all the more special by these silver boots. I usually share my more thought out looks on here but this is what I threw on to go for girlie drinks last week and I really like it!

I am all about straight leg jeans at the moment as they give any outfit a casual, not try hard look. These ones from ASOS are super comfortable and go really well with this military jacket that I have recently rediscovered and am loving. Of course I had to wear my new silver boots to add that special something to the outfit. That's the great thing about them - and statement shoes in general - they sass up any everyday outfit so you can keep things basic when having a cba moment. Note to self - must buy more statement shoes.

Would you like to see more everyday looks on this blog? What are your tips for spicing up everyday outfits?

Those Silver Boots That I Always Wanted

I recently read a great piece on SHOT FROM THE STREET which really spoke to me about the consumerist world we live in. The blog's author, Lizzy, interviewed stylist, presenter and shop owner Grace Woodward who spoke about micro trends and how "they befuddle who you are. Fashion is destabilising to make people buy, they consume more and more because they feel lost." I really relate to this idea, not because that is exactly how I act, but for two contrasting reasons.

Firstly, I am someone who is unable to buy as many clothes as she may want. My budget simply does not allow for it but also I am a thrifter at heart, who loves finding unique pieces for a fraction of high street prices. Secondly, I am certainly not an impulse buyer and I obsess over items I have seen for weeks, sometimes even months, wondering whether I could afford it or would I really wear it. Woodward backs the old fashioned idea of saving up for those special pieces that you really want rather than buying into every single trend that comes and goes so quickly and may not always be really 'you'.

These Office silver boots are certainly having their 'moment' with loads of bloggers wearing them or their rose gold/white/black/glitter equivalents and indeed as soon as I saw them a few months ago, I fell in love. In fact, I wanted silver ankle boots exactly like this way before these came out - it's as if the Office shoe designers climbed into my head and then produced my dream boots. In typical indecisive, money-saving Izzie fashion, I have been 'umming and arring' over purchasing them for months but I finally did last week. And it felt great. This was not a case of following a micro trend, nor a case of buying them because my favourite bloggers are wearing them. No. I bought them because I had been thinking about them for months, imagining them looking perfect with pieces I already had in my wardrobe and knowing that they were really 'me'.

So let's all just calm down - we do not need to have something just because it is 'in'. I have not bought into the off the shoulder trend because I don't think it suits me, nor did I buy those gorgeous pastel pink Dr Martens from their SS16 collection that I lusted over for just a day. Stay true to yourself and save up for those special pieces that you cannot stop thinking about - it will always be much more rewarding.

June Wishlist

Cat face body - YAYER / Féline Tee - Love From Misbehave / Boots - Office / Shoes - Fashion Union  / Raincoat - Asos

So, judging from this month's Wishist, I'm going through a grudge and cat phase. Well, to be honest my whole life is a cat phase and I love both of these cat related tops. The Yayer body is so cute, especially with tail on the back! I think it has been styled perfectly with the denim shorts. I have been looking for a casual grey tee and this one is ideal with the feline reference. Chunky shoes are definitely a trend that I can get on board with this season! I have actually already ordered these incredible Office boots but wanted to include them on the Wishlist anyway. Cut out boots are a new style and being half boot and half sandal they are perfect for our unpredictable climate. The Doc Martens style shoes are a great cheaper alternative for a classic look but unfortunately they don't currently have my size. And finally, as I'm in the festival mood, I was checking out PVC raincoats and found this lovely one on Asos. I don't think I can justify the purchase because I have a good enough (albeit boring) mac for Glastonbury but if I didn't I would definitely be getting this one!
