Fashion On 35mm Film

Fashion on film - experimenting with film photography for outfit posts
My love for photography truly began when I studied analog photography for A-level but because of the ease and cheapness of digital, I have only been sporadically taking film photos...until now. I had been toying with the idea of trying film photography for an outfit post for a while and finally took the plunge this summer. We did not even take any digital back-ups because I wanted to be fully committed to this experiment and I was confident enough in the art and in my photographer that I thought they were not needed - and I was right. These days we are too spoilt by being able to shoot hundreds of photos, pick our favourites and edit them to perfection and although this is extremely convenient, sometimes I wonder - where is the beauty in that? Even - what is the art of that? So I thought I would strip things back, take just eight outfit photos - all of which you see here and have not been edited - and try fashion blogging the way our mothers would have done it, if such a thing had existed back in the 80s.

I am absolutely chuffed with these photos. With just eight photos to play with, I had to really pose and there was the danger that these photos wouldn't look natural but I don't think that is the case at all! In fact, I almost like that in the third photo down I am mid-blink as this makes things more real.

I love the aesthetic of film - its vintage grain, different colours and perfectly imperfect out of focus blur - and it is certainly something that I want to incorporate more frequently onto this blog. I have another mini film outfit post coming later in the week that we shot one beautiful morning in Barcelona and after that I have to get shooting in Montreal!

Let's talk fashion now because this is an outfit post after all! I have already posted a summery outfit featuring this WHITE BLOUSE but this is a much more transitional look that I have been craving oh so much recently. I always think that white blouses look so great just tucked into a pair of jeans and today I have finished the outfit with my favourite silver boots to make this look a little more special for the film!

What do you think of film photography? Would you like to see outfits shot on film become a regular feature on Fashion Et Moi?

Culottes - ZAFUL*, T-shirt - Reading Festival, SIMILAR, Shoes - CONVERSE, Leather jacket - old ASOS, SIMILAR, Hat - vintage, SIMILAR
Location: Redland, Bristol

You guys have already seen these amazing ORANGE CULOTTES on this blog and over on my INSTAGRAM where they were very well received, so I wanted to show you another way to style them. I always thought that culottes required minimal and/or sportwear styling but today I am breaking all the rules and wearing them rock n roll style.

I have an on-off relationship with band/slogan/novelty tees, sometimes thinking they are too 2005, but right now I am loving them. This particular one is very dear to me as it celebrates The Libertines reunion at Reading Festival 2010 where I saw this special band for the first and only time. I think the red logo on the t-shirt goes perfectly with the orange of the culottes and the whole thing looks pretty damn good next to this VW campervan of dreams. Of course no rock n roll look would be complete without Converse and a leather jacket and I've  finished off the look with this perfect fedora, which I really must wear more.

How would you style these culottes?

Culottes - ZAFUL*, Body - Zara, Shoes - Converse, Choker - ZAFUL*
Location: Redland, Bristol

Following part one of my collaboration with ZAFUL on Monday where I styled that amazing WHITE BLOUSE WITH BELL SLEEVES, today I am back with part two featuring two pieces from this wonderful website. As I said in my previous post, it was so hard to choose just three pieces from their enormous and varied collection and since publishing Monday's post, I have had friends telling me how much they also love it! (One friend stated "I want it all.")

Ok so let's talk about these amazing WIDE LEG ORANGE CULOTTES! I do not normally wear orange and it is certainly a colour that I used to hate. However, recently I have been loving it more and more, especially this "burnt" orange shade. These trousers are a lovely shape and thanks to their light material, they are just perfect for the high temperatures that we have been having in the UK this week.

I instantly knew that I would pair these loose, dramatic culottes with a tight body for contrast and today I went for my simple, black V-neck one. I think a strappy, backless number would look super sassy with the culottes - perhaps as an evening holiday look (but for that I can only dream!). To finish off the look, I added this monster METAL CIRCLE CHOKER also by ZAFUL. It is such a statement piece and way wider than any of the chokers that I already own but I bloody love it.

Have you been wearing any colours recently that you previously hated? How would you style these orange culottes? I do actually have a completely different look featuring these culottes in the pipeline so look out for that!

White Blouse With Bell Sleeves By Zaful

Blouse - ZAFUL*, Dress - Primark, Shoes - Converse, Sunglasses - Ray Ban
Location: Redland, Bristol

I was recently contacted by the lovely people at ZAFUL who invited me to take a look at their online boutique and pick some pieces from the fantastically varied collection. From cute boho dresses and minimal shirts to quirky swimwear and a denim section to die for, there really is something for everyone and I seriously struggled to choose just a few items. I would definitely recommend having a look on ZAFUL, especially (but not exclusively) if you are on a budget.

Of course I could not resist this beautiful WHITE BLOUSE WITH BELL SLEEVES and it went straight in my basket. I am obsessed with romantic blouses, they are so versatile and you have already seen them many times on this blog styled under dungarees and paired with jeans or Levi's denim shorts.

Today I am trying a juxtaposition of styles by layering this dream seventies style blouse underneath my super nineties cave woman slip dress and I absolutely love the result. I think it works particularly well because the dress is covering the plain body section of the blouse, leaving the amazing layered pleated bell sleeves to do all the talking. I finished off the look simply with my Converse and Ray Ban sunglasses for a casual Saturday in the sun.

What unusual combinations have you been rocking recently?

Make sure you check back later this week for the second outfit from my collaboration with ZAFUL.
