Double Denim | The AW16 Edition

Double denim is an absolute failsafe outfit and it is something that I have rocked for many previous seasons. As I mentioned in my HOW TO BE ON TREND ON A BUDGET FOR AW16 VIDEO, it is super easy to update some old looks and pieces in your wardrobe simply by adding some AW16 touches and by hitting four key AW16 trends in one look, that is exactly what I have done today.

Denim continues to be in the spotlight and this season it is all about the textures. Think raw hems, contrasting washes, patchwork...the rougher and more thrown together, the better so I paired my heavy denim vintage Levi's with DIY frayed hems together with my super old, light denim shirt for the perfect clash of textures.

It is all about strange layering for AW16 whether that be rocking a super long hoody over some girlfriend jeans or wearing clashing prints on top of each other, you have to think outside the box. For this relaxed Sunday outfit, I just tucked in one side of my denim shirt for a casual, thrown on look that still ticks all the layering boxes.

Now let's talk details. Pins, patches and brooches are still having a moment but this season they come with more sparkle and shine than their spring/summer counterparts. I absolutely love this trend because it is such a simple way to add that extra something to an outfit. I pinned this super old gem brooch to the collar of the shirt to add another shade of blue to this denim look.

Metallics are always a big trend for autumn/winter and this year is no exception. I think the reason that we all love wearing something sparkly during the winter months is because it gives a big middle finger to the cold and makes us feel better. I am certainly bringing the must-have boot of the summer into my AW16 wardrobe - well, as long as the Montreal weather permits it - and they just look perfect next to a raw denim hem.

So there you have it, four AW16 trends in one look. What are your tips for being on trend for AW16?

Le denim double fait toujours une tenue géniale et il est quelque chose que je mets depuis longtemps. Comme j'en ai parlé dans ma VIDEO COMMENT ETRE A LA MODE POUR AUTOMNE-HIVER 16, il est facile de mettre au goût du jour des anciens looks et pièces en ajoutant tout simplement des détails d'automne-hiver 16 et aujourd'hui, j'intègre quatre tendances en une tenue.

Le denim continue à être en vedette et cette saison c'est les textures qui sont importants. Des ourlets déchirés, des couleurs différentes, du patchwork...le plus brut, le meilleur alors j'ai mis mon jean Levi's du denim épais avec des ourlets coupés DIY ensemble avec un ancien chemisier léger en bleu jean clair pour un contraste de textures.

Pour automne-hiver 16, on met des couches bizarres genre un sweat à capuche oversized par-dessus d'un jean girlfriend ou plein de motifs différents ensemble, il faut réfléchir hors des sentiers battus. Pour cette tenue simple de dimanche, j'ai rentré un côté du chemisier dans le jean pour un look décontracté qui est toujours super tendance.

Maintenant, on parle de détails. On adore toujours des épingles, des écussons et des broches mais ils sont tous plus brillants que ceux qu'on portait en été. J'aime bien cette tendance parce qu'il est super facile d'en ajouter un à une tenue pour quelque chose d'extra. J'ai mis ce vieux broche au col de mon chemisier pour ajouter une autre nuance bleu à ce look denim.

Des pièces métalliques sont toujours super tendances pour automne-hiver et il n'y a pas d'exception cette année. Je pense que la raison pour laquelle on aime bien porter des pièces brillantes en hiver est pour faire un doigt d'honneur au temps froid et pour nous réconforter. Evidement, je garde des bottines must-have d'été pour mon placard d'hiver - bah, tant que le temps de Montréal me permet - et elles sont parfaites proche des ourlets déchirés.

Sailor Stripes, Ruffles And Denim

What trends are always massive in spring and summer? That's right, stripes and denim. Throw in SS16 trend newbie ruffles and we have today's outfit. I picked up this adorable striped ruffle t-shirt top (among other things) on a recent visit to Zara to settle my ever-growing panic of not having anything to wear. 

I think this top is going to be my easy throw on top this spring because it is just super versatile. Here I have paired it with a wardrobe staple, the button down denim skirt, but it will look equally good with some skinny jeans or cut off shorts. As this look is quite relaxed, I just added my much loved (read: scruffy) Converse and a baker boy cap. 

What are your turn-to pieces this spring?

Quelles sont les plus grandes tendances chaque printemps et été? Oui, des rayures et du denim. On ajoute la nouvelle tendance de ruches et voilà, vous avez ce look du jour. J'ai acheté ce haut chez Zara pour régler ma panique d'avoir rien à porter.

Je pense que ce haut deviendra le haut que je mettrai beaucoup en printemps parce qu'il ira avec plein de pièces. Aujourd'hui, je l'ai mis avec un must-have de votre placard, une jupe en jean bouttonné, mais je sais qu'il ira super bien avec un jean skinny ou un short déchiré. Vu que ce look est déjà décontracté, J'ai fini ce outfit en mettant mes Converse adorés (ou usés!) et une casquette marine.

Fringed Flares

Everyone just stop what you're doing and take a minute to admire these AMAZING jeans. I love them. They're so unique yet tick so many boxes of this season's trends. Flares, yes. Fringing, yes. Denim, yes. As the flares are quite a statement, I've paired them with a simple plain white tee, leather jacket and these lovely maroon suede boots (I know you're all jumping for joy for seeing different shoes on the blog rather than my trusty Docs!). Skinny scarves are the key accessory for the 70s trend so I threw that on too.

Tout le monde, arrêtez ce que vous faites et prenez une minute pour regarder ce jean MAGNIFIQUE. Je le kiffe. Il est très unique mais il coche plein de tendances cette saison. Des pattes d'eph, oui. Du frange, oui. Du jean, ouaissss. Vu que ces pattes d'eph sont l'étoile de cette tenue, j'ai mis un tee-shirt blanc et simple, un perfecto et ces bottes bordeaux en daim (je sais que vous êtes tous trop contents de voir des chaussures qui ne sont pas mes Dr Martens préférés sur le blog!). Les écharpes slims sont l'accessoire must-have cette saison alors j'en ai mis une aussi pour finir le look.

Military & Double Denim

All vintage except Dr Martens shoes.

Both denim and the utility trend are big this season so why not combine them? This look is really layered - I left the denim shirt loose over the skort rather than tucking it in as usual, and I really like it. Double denim can be quite difficult to wear so my rule is to not overdo it. I bought this little sand-coloured military jacket a few years ago in a vintage shop and I've just rediscovered it! It's nice and light for summer and looks great both open and tied together with the attached belt.

Du jean et la tendance "utilité" sont très à la mode cette saison du coup pourquoi pas les mettre ensemble? Ce look est très superposé - j'ai laissé la chemise en jean ample sur la "skort" au lieu de la mettre à l'intérieur comme d'habitude et j'aime bien. Il est difficile des fois de porter deux articles en jean au même temps mais il faut qu'on n'en fait pas trop, c'est ma règle. J'ai acheté cette petite veste militaire de couleur sable il y a quelques années et je viens de la redécouvrir! Elle est super et légère pour l'été et elle est bien ouverte et aussi fermée avec la ceinture attachée.

Three Trends in One

Vintage suede skirt / Topshop denim shirt (old) / Dr Martens shoes

Denim, suede and the button down skirt - this is how to hit three of this season's top trends in one. A classic denim shirt is a wardrobe staple for any girl (or guy for that matter) and luckily for us, denim and suede are just a match made in fashion heaven. How amazing is this multicoloured suede skirt?! The colours are absolutely beautiful, as is the scallop cut and must-have buttons down the front. Perfection. 

Let's move on to the real star, this beautiful cat that photo-bombed in the middle of the shoot. I am delighted to finally share the spotlight with a fluffy buddy - I think I'll be hanging around this daffodil-filled square more often!

Du jean, du daim et la jupe boutonnée - voilà comment mettre ensemble trois des tendances de cette saison. Une chemise en jean est une essentielle pour toutes les filles (et tous les mecs en fait) et heureusement, du jean et du daim ont un mariage parfait. Comment elle est trop magnifique cette jupe en daim multi-colorée?! Les couleurs sont vachement belles, la coupe aussi et les must-have boutons devant. Parfaite. 

En fait, il faut vraiment parler de la vraie étoile, ce beau chat qui a photobombé quand on était en plein shooting. Je suis trop heureuse de partager enfin le cadre avec cette boule de poils - je pense que je traînerai plus souvent dans cette place de jonquilles!

Denim and Fishnet

Today I'm rocking this casual 90s inspired outfit. I think this dress has already starred on the blog but it goes perfectly with the fishnet sleeves so I'm sure you guys don't mind! I bought this mesh top from a vintage shop for €2 and after a little DIY cutting here and there, it is ready for this winter to spring transition period.

Aujourd’hui, je porte ce look décontracté, inspiré par les années 90. Je pense que j’ai déjà mis un look avec cette robe sur le blog mais elle va parfaitement avec le haut résille et je suis sur que cela ne vous dérange pas ! J’ai acheté cette haute résille dans une friperie pour 2 € et après avoir le coupé un peu, il est prêt pour cette période de transition entre hiver et printemps !

90s Throwback

It is inevitable that trends come back into fashion again and again. When I started wearing skinny jeans or “drainpipes” in the noughties, my parents could remember the last time they were in fashion, but this time I remember the trend from the first time around. Let the nostalgia begin as we all go back to the 90s.

 This outfit is my slightly more modern take on a 90s look. I think these jeans look great with a platform/creeper shoe and the crop top makes the jeans look less bulky. I bought these Levi jeans off eBay last summer after being inspired by watching re-runs of old Friends episodes. Rachel, Monica and Phoebe are wearing, in the early episodes, exactly what is in fashion now including jeans like these, check and crop shirts, loose tops, and lots and lots of denim.

Denim

As you can see, I am obsessed with denim. It is such a versatile material and goes with everything – except for maybe itself. Although it was done in the 90s and some think they can pull it off now, I cannot say that I am a fan of double denim. Denim was certainly big in the 90s and its popularity in recent years I welcome with open arms.

Doc Martens

Doc Martens were the shoe of choice in the 90s if you were a teenager listening to grunge. They were also the shoe of choice for a certain 6 year old; me. I was so in love with my pair of red patent Docs that I had a few pairs of them over my childhood! This winter my love for Doc Martens was revived and I bought some lookalike cheap ones from Topshop. But I am definitely going to be investing in either black patent or maroon DMs for next winter!

Platforms

Flatforms - Superga

Platforms, flatforms, creepers; whatever you want to call them they were a massive 90s trademark and who were their pioneers, the great Spice Girls. Now, they're back and everyone is loving it.

Accessories

This is slightly a strange mix of essential 90s accessories but it can be random which trends make a come back. Scrunchies have been available in some of the high street shops for about a year now and I have seen these tattoo style bracelets on some people last time I was in London. Both are cute and quirky additions to outfits.

What I really love about the 90s throwback is how a top end designer like Chanel has got involved. My friend Gina, who describes herself as a “total Chanel devotee”, recently tried out Chanel’s new coloured mascaras...

...and gave me her thoughts:

“Originally I thought it would be unwearable, but now that summer is finally here, adding a little bit of light blue to your lower lashes instantly brightens the eyes. Definitely a fun addition to your make-up bag, and a great way to refresh your make-up for the summer!”

Although I haven’t tried Chanel’s mascaras yet, I completely agree. Adding a bit of colour to your eyes is a great look for festivals and summer parties.
